Mulholland drive is a mystery, neo noir film directed by David Lynch starring Naomi Watts and Justin Theroux. The movie received a academy award nomination for best direction. Even though there is mixed reviews about the movie, it is still considered as the one of the best movies of all time. This movie made David Lynch to accepted by the international audience.

The story progress on a amnesiac woman recovering from a accident meets a actress named Betty. The plot is very confused and mind-bending and is considered as one of the most confusing movie of all time according to the IMDB. David Lynch declined to offer an explanation for the movie in an interview and he left it for the audience. Still many researches and theories were made to crack the in-depth of the film. There are a lot of symbolisms are used in even objects and people, and real incidents also depicted in the movie. Viewers also get confused by the orientation of characters portraited in the movie.

Spoiler Alert Sorry this movie demands a review with spoilers

So I will share my personnel opinion about the movie. There will be spoilers in it. The films is about difference between our wishes and reality. Lynch portraits wishes or ambitions through a dream. But the reality always happen to be a disaster. In the movie, Betty is a very well known accepted famous actress in the dream, but a failed actress in real life. So reality always hurts. In the first scene of the movie, a dance is shown on the stage and in between we can see the character Betty. Betty seems to be very happy like receiving a movie award. The uncle and aunty also near the stage seems to be very proud of Betty. So in this we can understand director David Lynch sketches a successful famous actress Betty and everyone is proud of it. So this is the ambition or wishes in her dream. From here we can move to the last part of the film. In the last part we can see that name changes from Betty to Diane. In real life Betty is Diane. So, Diane is a failed actress now. She even don’t have money to pay for rent and her career was almost still without getting chances in the movies. In the last part, it is shown that uncle and aunty is chasing Diane by blaming her. So, her wishes was to become a successful actress and make uncle and aunty proud. But in real life, she is a failed actress and they was blaming her. And there are lot more other examples in the movie. So, in the dream the director character played by Justin Theroux have crush on Betty, and very understandable life made by the lesbian friend of Betty. But in real life, the lesbian friend of Betty’s will marry the director and Betty will make revenge of her by hiring a hitman

Another key thing noticed is that play on the Silencio club. It is the one of the most beautiful poetic scenes in the movie. The Silencio club is the intermediate between the dreams and reality. Betty and amnesiac friend will becomes highly emotional and cries through the act. So why they are crying? The director is showing that it is an end of good relationship or friendship there. After all they’re enemies. So many detailing like this are depicted in the movie.

So there are some more interesting facts in the movie. There are real-life accidents are depicted in the movie as I mentioned earlier. There is a accident scene shown in the very first of the movie. That accident is actually occurred in the Mullholland drive and one actress died. Mulholland drive is a actual place.

There is many director brilliance we can see through the whole movie. So one scene I felt was there is horrified old lady we can see in Betty’s aunt apartment. And the old lady is warning betty to not to mingle with that amnesiac women, there is a danger waiting. Actually she is got warning in the dream itself. Later, as the movie progresses we can understand that old lady was right. Actually that amnesiac women is abandoning betty in real life.

Another shocking detailing I noticed in the movie was death scene of Diane in reality. In the starting of the movie we can notice Betty is trying to find the apartment of the amnesiac women. So she finds her apartment by finding the phone number. So both of them will go to that apartment by a taxi. But in that apartment, they will found a ugly dead body. It is the same dead body of Betty in climax scene portraited there. So, this is the one of the plot twist I have seen in my entire life.

David lynch had tried to make this as a TV series, but turned down by the producer. So he compelled to make a movie. As someone says ‘It is not everyone’s cup of tea. Those who love drama and mystery only should cone for this movie. Yet it is considered as the one of the underrated movie in the Hollywood have rating of 8.1 in IMDB but deserved more.
